Hi, my name is Katie and I'm studying Politics in at UCL (London, England). I'm doing my final year dissertation at the moment. The focus of my dissertation is EU Expansion from the perspective of the English School (Rationalism).

Does anyone have suggests as to good articles or books about the solidarism strand within the English School?

Also, does anyone know of any texts that look at the EU written by English School theorists? As most of the main writers focus on contemporary International Society.

Many thanks!

Robert Cooper is an interesting read in regards to this. Look up his book 'The Breaking of Nations.' He isn't a theorist as such but is very close to the English School in his approach. What I found interesting, and hope you find useful, is his 'solidarist' approach to the EU and other 'post-modern' nations being twinned with a 'pluralist' approach to the rest of the world. Like I say, not strictly an IR theorist but he adds a lot of interesting ideas. There is plenty on the EU in his book.

It is probable you know his writings anyway so I apologise if I'm no help.

The English School has rarely paid attention to European integration and other related issues.But now this situation
is beginning to change. Analysis of European integration by related approaches and concepts gradually has become the
main concern of the English School. It will not only supplement the European integration theories and explanations, but
also expand its own academic space.
There are some papers I can suggest:
Jacek Czaputowicz, The English School of International Relations and its Approach to European Integration, Studies & Analyses, www.leeds.ac.uk/polis/englishschool/Czaputowicz03.pdf.
Ian Manners, Normative Power Europe: The European Union between International and World Society, Presented to 4th Pan-European International Relations Conference, University of Kent at Canterbury;
Richard Whitman, The Enlargement of EU International and World Society, Presented to 4th Pan-European International Relation Conference, University of Kent at Canterbury;
Thomas Diez, The Intertwining of Societies: Exploring the EU’s System of Governance, Presented to 4th Pan-European International Relations Conference, University of Kent at Canterbury
Thomas Diez, Richard G. Whitman, Comparing Regional International Societies: The Case of Europe Paper for presentation at the ISAA annual Convention, New Orleans, LA, March2002.
